Section 1 - The Accomplished Projects during 2005

Power Generation

Layyah Power Station:

Completion of Nano-Filtration system for the Desalination Unit No.  9.
Amendment of control & maintenance systems of four desalination units (No.5 and 6).

Some amendments & related civil works were carried out as follows:

- Construction of new 40 MW boilers.
- 132 KV switchgear
- Control Cameras.

Wasit Power Station:

Completion of Phase 5 Wasit Power Station Project, Installation and commissioning the tenth and the eleventh units of 2x100 MW Frame 9 Gas Turbine. The new two units was commissioned on 20th, June and 24th, October 2005, including Civil works of the two new gas turbines.

Khorfakkan Power Station:

 Amendment of control & maintenance systems of gas turbines No (1&2).

Kalba Power Station:

Amendment of control & maintenance systems of gas turbine No 1.
Expansion of compound wall to cover the additional land of the Station.

Main Office:

Constructing building of "SIT Ladies Division"
Accomplishment of Geographical Information System.


Transmission & Distribution Substations and Networks:


132 KV Transmission Substations.

-          Installation of Majaz-4 Substation (225 capacities) at Sharjah city, it consists    of   3 transformers with 75 MVA capacities each.
-          Development of Layyah & Sports Center 132 KV substations.
-          33KV distribution substations.
-          Installation & commissioning of three substations (two in Sharjah city at Al Qassimiya & Abu Shagara-4 areas, and one in Khorfakkan).

 11/6.6 KV distribution substations

Addition of 348 substations comprising of 393 transformers having capacity of "391.4" MVA (out of which 318 substations are located in Sharjah city comprising of 347 transformers of 338.1 MVA, 18 "11KV" substations comprising of 25 transformers of 29.1 MVA in Khorfakkan and 12 "11KV" substations comprising of 21transformers of 24.2 MVA in Kalba).
 

Electricity Distribution Networks

132 KV Underground Cables:

 13 km were laid in Sharjah city.

33 KV Underground Cables:

50 km were laid in Sharjah city.

(11&6.6) KV Underground Cables

150.50 km were laid (out of which 134.83 km in Sharjah city, 5.73 km in Khorfakkan and 9.94 km in Kalba).

Street lighting

   Lighting of Sharjah Ring Road, some residential areas ( Jazaat and Falaj), sports Clubs (playgrounds of football, Basketball and volleyball), parks (at Nahda, Azra, Shahba and Gurain), some bridges and lagoons of Kalba.   


 Fire fighting system 

  Accomplishment of fire fighting systems in Khorfakkan.

Other constructions

Transmission and Construction of four supplementary feeders from industrial area-17,  to industrial area-7 and sport center area (two for each).

Construction of "shunt reactor banks" at industrial area-7.

Construction of emergency office and garage in Khorfakkan.

Construction of workshop of maintenance & checkup meters in Khorfakkan.

Construction of a boundary wall to cover the additional land of Kalba Power Station.

Natural Gas Distribution 

Using of  Natural Gas as fuel for vehicles: 

   The 1st Phase of this project - which aim to apply the use of the most efficient, cleanest and safest fuel energy sources to safeguard the environment & public health and safety of the society - was completed. It covers the conversion of 300 vehicles of SEWA to use the Compressed Natural Gas as fuel instead of petrol.

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qassimi, the Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of SEWA Board of Directors opened the first Station of Compressed Natural Gas Filling for vehicles -the first of its kind in UAE and the Arabian Gulf Countries Region- at Halwan area on Saturday, 12 February, 2005. 

  As part of the efforts towards achieving the ideal use of Sharjah natural gas distribution network and in line with efforts made to utilize the natural gas as a future strategic fuel source as well as preserve the environment, SEWA signed a contract with Adnoc Distribution to construct four CNG filling stations during 2006 followed by More CNG filling Stations in order to meet the needs of vehicles and cars owned by Sharjah government departments and authorities including Sharjah transport, while the taxi cars as well as cars owned by private organizations and individuals will be covered latter.


Gas Supply to remaining residential areas. 

New gas installations were made to supply gas to the commercial and industrial areas (Al Nahda, Al Khan and Al Mamzar). 



Water Production & Distribution:

Desalination plant and units:

Unit No. 8 in Layyah Desalination Plant has been upgraded and refurbished.
New Well fields and boreholes.

Wadi Sa'adiah  Well field                                                          

    This well field is located halfway between Tawi  Mohafiz and Tawi Nazwa. It was commissioned in June, 28th 2005. It consists of “28” produced wells with 4.2 million gallon per day available capacity.

Tawi Wahoosh Well field
                                                         

  This Well field was commissioned in August, 10th 2005. It consists of “29” produced wells with 4.4 mg per day available capacity. It is proposed to increase its production from 3 to 5 mgd by drilling 20 additional boreholes.

New drilled boreholes                                                    

Five new boreholes are drilled at Seih harmal Well field to augment its yield to 2.25 mgd.



Water Transmission & Distribution

Water Distribution Networks

  Laying of various diameters Water pipelines & mains of 162.65 km, out of which 120.25 km in Sharjah city, 6.03 km in Khorfakkan and 36.38 km in Kalba).


New Connections:

(2650) additional Connections were carried, 2143 in Sharjah city ( 947 residential sector, 821 commercial sector and 375 industrial sector), 283 in Khorfakkan (247 residential sector and 36 commercial sector) and 224 in Kalba (180  residential sector, 22 commercial sector and 22 industrial sector).


Load Dispatch Center (LDC)

Works were done by the Contractor (Areva T&D company):

Completing technical works relating to adaptation and control of power stations and distribution & transmission substations up to 33 KV.

Completing the computer system of adaptation and control of power stations and distribution & transmission substations

completing the Fiber-optic network

Works were done by the LDC:

- completing recruitment of Center's staff for the  various technical section.

- Laying the Fiber-Optic cables to the stations and new buildings of SEWA.

- Updating entering the new distribution & transmission substations.

- Considering a coordination mechanism between the Center and  Layyah & Wasit stations and the Directorate of Transmission & Distribution.

completing the design works of the new information network of SEWA which will link all SEWA's stations, directorates and departments In Sharjah by using Fiber-Optic cable Network

Section 2 - The under progress &  new Projects

    Pursuant to the directives made by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah who devotes continuous attention and unlimited support to the modernization projects especially those concerned with infrastructure to enhance the development in various fields and in response to his concern to ensure the best modern living standards for both nationals and residents.   H.H Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, the Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and the Chairman of SEWA’s Board of Directors endorsed the 2006 budget of SEWA amounting to Dhs 3,394,000,000. The budget allocates an amount of Dhs 1,552,172,000 for operating expenses, running expenses and the semi capital expenses while Dhs 1,841,828,000 is allocated for the new projects. Following are some of these projects: 

Administration buildings:

Construction of new building for Qasimiyah Branch Office is accomplished. Shifting to the new building took place in May 2006.

Extension to the Head Office will be constructed with AED 5 million cost

Electricity Generation:

Establishment of Hamriyah Station for Elec. Generation & Water Desalination:

Work was started to develop this new power in Hamriyah town. The first phase of the project comprised of four Frame 9 gas turbines of 100 MW capacity each. The first and second phases of gas turbines commissioned in June and July 2006 respectively while the third and fourth gas turbines will be commissioned in  December 2006 and February 2007 respectively.

The total cost of the Phase 1 is AED 965 million, out of which AED 650 million for supply, installation and commissioning of four gas turbines and 2 emergency generators of 100 MW capacity each, AED 45.5 million for the civil works relating to the new turbines, AED 65 million for the civil works relating to the new station, AED 84 million for supply, installation and commissioning of switchgears and equipment of 220/132 KV Substation, AED 55 million for land reclamation works of Phase  1 , AED 50 million for 132 KV  transmission substation and 33KV Distribution Substation including the civil works, AED 9 million for construction of 2 fuel tanks and 2 firefighting tanks,  AED 8 million for  construction of the compound wall, AED 6 million for construction of the administration building, stores and workshops, AED 1.5 million for two supply of cranes for the new station

Wasit Power Station:

Phase 6 of Wasit Power Station Project, comprises of two Rolls Royce Aero Derivative Gas Turbines of 50 MW capacity each will be commenced. Both units are scheduled to be commissioned by 2007 with total cost of AED 155 million.

Layyah Power Station:

Amendment of conrol & maintenance systems of  Units Nos. 7 & 8 with total cost of 15 million
 

Additional works including civil works with total cost of 5.2 million as follows:

- Replacement of old air compressors with total cost of 3 million
- Installation of protection equipment for G. T Nos. A & B
- Construction fo administration building with total cost of 3.2 million

Khorfakkan Power Station

Automatic cleaning filters will be provided with cost of AED 4 million
Additional compound wall will be constructed with AED 1 million cost
Construction of Stores access roads in the station (Interlock) with a cost of one million dirham. 

Three new generators:

Three new generators will be supplied with cost of AED 93000. The first generator of 1000 KW capacity for Abu Mussa Power Station, the second one of 500 KW capacity for Mohazeb Pumping Station, while the third one 120 KW capacity for  Nassiryah Emergency station.

Electricity Distribution & Transmission

220 & 132 KV electrical transmission substations:

 

Construction of 220 KV electrical transmission substation at Tai area in Sharjah comprising of 2x100 MVA transformers with total cost of AED 236 Million including cabling cost. The substation is scheduled to be commissioned by 2007

 

Construction of 132 KV electrical transmission substation at Abu Shaghara area in Sharjah comprising of 3x100 MVA transformers with total cost of AED 50 Million. The substation is scheduled to be commissioned in 2006

3/A/3: Construction of 5 additional feeders with total cost of AED 15 million, out of which 3 feeders for  Hamriyah 132 KV Substation, one for Industrial Area 17  132 KV Substation and one for Sport Center  132 KV Substation   

 

33 KV Distribution Substations:

Construction of six 33 KV Distribution Substations with total cost of AED 60 million (including cables and capacities) in Sharjah City (areas of Majurah, Al Nahda, Al Ramtha, Al Ramlah, Mohweleh Commercial, Expo and Al Mamzr2 )

 

Enhancements  of the following substations with total cost of AED 3 million: Industrial 7B, Industrial15, Industrial 17A, University 3, Saja'a, Falah, Water, Qassimyah 1 and Majaz.

 

Electrical transmission & Distribution Networks:

Construction of 172.5 Km of 132 KV cables with total cost of AED 96 million as follows: (72 km  for  area of the schools,  36 km from  Hamriyah Power Station to  Hamriyah Transmission Substation, 36 km for Mamzar Substation and 28.5 km from  Industrial 17 to Sport Center.

Upgrading of 24 km of Hamriyah – Saja's Cable from 123 KV to 220 KV with total cost of AED 18 million.

 

Construction of 126 km of 33 KV cables in Sharjah city with total cost of AED 17 million as follows: 86 km of 630 mm dia cables, 28.6 km of 400 mm dia. And 11.4 km of 400 mm dia. single cables to reinforce the network.

 

construction of new substations with  AED 4 million to connect electrical supply to the new low-cost houses at areas of Qadisiyah, Luluyah, Jaradia and Zibara in Khorfakkan

Extension of the Electrical Distribution Network in Kalba with total cost of AED 4 million

 

Street Lighting:

Street lighting projects with total cost of AED 30.8 million are executed in 2006 ( out of which AED 30 million for Sharjah city,  AED 800,000 for Khorfakkan and  Kalba.

  

Fire Fighting Systems:

New fire fighting systems with total cost of AED 3.6 million will be provided in 2006 (out of which AED  3.2 million for ten 33 KV distribution substations in Sharjah City and AED 0.4 million the Stores, Head office and Workshop in Khorfakkan.)

 

Other new transmission and Distribution Projects:

New 2X 50 MVA, 220/33 KV transformers  and 33 KV Switchgear will added to the 220 KV Wasit Transmission substation with total cost of AED 22.32 Million including the civil works

 

A new administration building for the Directorate pf Transmission & Distribution is to be constructed with total cost of AED 4.5 million including cost of A/C systems and other facilities. Addition of 15 new capacitors with total cost of AED 4 million (including civil works). Supply of new generator of 500 KW capacity for Nahwa Substation in Khorfakkan with total cost of AED 0.5 million. Construction of the compound wall and interlocks for Nahwa Substation and interlocks for Khorfakkan Station with total cost of AED 0.675 million.Building of new stores in Kalba with total cost of AED 1.1 million (including backfilling and leveling works)

Natural Gas Distribution

Use of CNG as Fuel for Vehicles:

Phase 2 of this pioneering and vital project reflecting the commitment of SEWA to maintenance of environment and public health, will be started soon. Phase 2  of the CNG driven vehicles project will cover the conversion of  vehicles and cars belong to the  local government departments and authorities of Sharjah such Sharjah as well as taxis and vehicles and cars belong to the individuals and private companies to use natural gas as fuel instead of petrol. A number of vehicles gas filling stations will be established in Sharjah to supply such vehicles and cars with natural gas. The project will promote the image of SEWA as an environment friendly organization  and  enhance the efforts made seek for cleanest renewable fuel resources and ensure the rational use of this strategic energy resource to protect the environment 

Other projects of Natural Gas:

-          Construction of a new administration building for the Directorate of Natural Gas Distribution. With total cost of AED 4 million (including interlocks/ compound wall/workshop). The building is scheduling to be completed by the 2nd half of 2006.
-          Construction of new standby storage tank of natural gas, with AED 3 million cost in progress
-          Feasibility study with cost of AED 0.5 million on project of  Natural gas cooling systems for buildings
-          Connection of gas supply the residential areas:
        Work is in progress to connect piped natural gas supply to the remaining residential, commercial and industrial building in Sharjah city with total cost of AED 10 million
 

Water Distribution & Production: 

Water Desalination Plants: 

Wasit Desalination Plant:

It is planned to supply, install and commission ten MED desalination units of 8 million gallons per day capacity each (80 mgd total capacity) during 2007 and 2008 with total cost of AED 900 million. Including distribution pipelines.  

Layyah Desalination Plant:

MED Desalination unit with capacity of million gallons per day and R.O desalination unit of 5 million gallons per day will be commissioned at Layyah Power Station by 2007 with total cost of AED 300 million including the civil works, 4 boilers, reclamation and sea backing filling works. 

Khorfakkan Desalination  Plant:

R.O Desalination Unit of capacity of 5 million gallons per day and with total cost of AED 90 million will commissioned in Khorfakkan by Summer 2007. 

Kalba Desalination  Plant:

R.O Desalination Unit of capacity of 2 million gallons per day commissioned in Kalba in June 2006 with total cost of AED 50 million including sea water pumping house. 

Two underground water storage tanks of capacity of 3 million gallons per day each and with total cost of AED 8 million  will be completed and commissioned by 2007 

Compound wall, office building and additional lab will constructed at Khorfakkan Power Station with total cost of AED 0.5 million  

New wellfields:

Projects of developing new water wells with total cost of AED 3.5 million are under progress out of which AED 2 million for additional works at Al Wohoosh Wellfield and AED 1.5 million for drilling new wells in Sharjah, Khorfakkan and Kalba.

 Aquifer Storage & Recovery project:

The execution of Phase 2 of this project, with total cost of AED 5 million, is under progress  

Halwan Water Storage Tank

Halwan Water Storage Tank of 15 million gallons capacity and with total cost of AED 30 million will constructed and completed by Summer 2007.

 Water Distribution Network:

New water connections to water distribution networks will be made with total cost of AED 15.65 million out of which AED 15 million in Sharjah, AED 650,000 in Khorfakkan and Kalba.

 Other water projects:

Construction of a new building for the Directorate of water is under progress. 

A new lab for Water Distribution Department in Sharjah with total cost of AED 0.5 million.
 

Zulal Water Factory:

Work is in progress to construct of new factory, near Hamada Water Station, with total cost of AED 15 million. The new factory will mainly depend on raw from underground springs.  Zulal factory will shift to its new location in 2007. 

A new g gallon line of 2000 bottles/hours with AED 4.5 million cost will be commissioned by the end of 2006.

A new R.O plant of 0.5 million gallons per day capacity and 3 stainless steel tanks, with AED 0.5 million will be provided at the new location.

Control Center:

Projects of AED 30 million will be executed to link all SEWA station within 2007.
